My mom and I were pregnant when she was born, so that was a little scary for me.
But then I learned that my mom was the first woman to be diagnosed with a fetal alcohol syndrome, a neurological condition in which a fetus can’t properly metabolize alcohol.
My mom said it was because she was drinking too much, but the symptoms were so severe that it was nearly impossible to find out what the cause was.
The condition has a low threshold of detection and, unfortunately, can be life-threatening.
Luckily, my mom didn’t get any serious damage from the condition, and she and I have remained very healthy.
My dad and I got a little too drunk on the way home from work, and we didn’t realize it until after the car crash that we were going to be in for some serious trouble.
I was in a coma, and my mom never regained consciousness, but I remember her saying to me that we should have tried to make her a little more comfortable.
My mother said that she wanted to be a part of my life, but she didn’t have any idea how to tell me to stop drinking.
Now, my dad has been sober for three years, and he’s a big believer in getting to know his daughter better.
